There's no denying that the life of Michael Jackson is absolutely worthy of a film if not a TV series, but of course, an estate-endorsed biopic was never going to offer up an even-handed deep-dive into the troubled pop star's storied life, warts and all.

From Jackson's ascent to fame and career highs to the abuse allegations levelled against him and his untimely death, the drama basically writes itself, yet it shouldn't have surprised anyone that Michael was ultimately a deeply sanitised Wikipedia Page Biopic.

What we get here is a wafer-thin, hagiographic celebration of Jackson's discography and... not a whole lot else. 

Jackson's nephew Jaafar certainly gives it his all in the lead role, but he and the wider cast are given depressingly little to work with, while the film makes no effort to engage with Jackson's more problematic history.

While the impending sequel could touch on this material, considering the first film grossed more than $1 billion while glossing over it entirely, it'll probably stay the course for Part II.
