Written, directed, produced and even co-edited by the man himself, the larger-than-life spectacle centering on a war between greedy humans and a species of tall blue humanoids known as Na'vi really was just that. With stunning special effects and breathtaking visuals, it was acclaimed for being perhaps the most immersive cinematic experience of all-time. And the audience demand clearly reflected that as it went onto topple Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time - a record it held for a decade.

Time may not have been as kind to Avatar as it has been to others on this list, with public perception of the film changing over the years due its bloated length and standard storyline, but the feats that Cameron accomplished on the big screen with this epic took science fiction filmmaking to new heights at a time when we thought it had peaked long ago - and that should never be overlooked.
