20 Sequels That Brilliantly Fixed Past Mistakes

19. Avengers: Age Of Ultron - Better Cinematography

This one is an interesting case. Here is a sequel that fixed the biggest issue with its predecessor while being inferior in every other department.

2012's The Avengers was a brilliantly-scripted gem that gave most of the characters a chance to shine, pitted them against an all-timer villain, and featured what are still, even now, some of the best action sequences in the MCU. It's a fantastic superhero movie with one glaring flaw: it's visually flat.

Writer-director Joss Whedon might've done an amazing job with the script, but his TV roots do come across too much here. It does look rather like a TV movie at times, as in, back when that was still an insult. Still, Whedon was unsurprisingly brought back for 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron and, having now had some practice, he improved as a director.

Shot in a more cinematic aspect ratio and featuring more dynamic cinematography - including a memorable one-shot where the camera floats through the opening battle sequence - this is a notable step up from its predecessor in that regard. As mentioned, this mediocre sequel is inferior to The Avengers in pretty much every other way, so its visuals are the only department where it actually managed to be an improvement.
