20 Things You Didn't Know About Batman Returns

6. Keaton Demanded A Zipper For His Batsuit

The clue is kind of in the title, but Batman Returns is a sequel. Well, sort of.

The film was a follow-up to 1989’s inventively-monikered Batman in the sense that Tim Burton had also brought life to that screenplay too. But, in many respects, Returns was always intended to be a standalone effort. Very few references are made to the first movie, and there’s barely anything in the way of narrative continuation, but one key point of consistency is in the decision to cast leading man Michael Keaton.

Clearly, however, Keaton felt that some alterations were necessary for the movie, and insisted on having a zipper fitted to his Batsuit the second time around. After all, even superheroes have to pee sometimes.

Also, it might look like Michael Keaton’s wearing some good old fashioned leather boots with his nifty Batsuit, but the reality was that the Caped Crusader was in fact stalking around Gotham in pair of Nike Air Jordan 6’s. The trainers were then strapped to an artificial upper to give them a boot-like feeling. Catwoman, take note.
