Release Date: July 14, 2017 Why It Could Beat Fury Road: Last year's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes completely steamrolled expectations, serving up one of the year's most thought-provoking, emotional, and action-packed blockbusters. Dawn was really just a taster for what should be the blistering third act, the full-out war between the apes and the humans, while Caesar (Andy Serkis) likely finds himself stuck in the middle. Matt Reeves proved on Dawn just how comfortable he is directing epic set-pieces, and given the surely jaw-dropping quality of the visual effects on display, for War audiences should expect a mighty, smart, affecting blockbuster with few equals. How Likely Is It?: 8/10. This one's definitely one of the best bets so far. It has "epic" written all over it, and if it's done right, will give Serkis his best work of the whole series. There's practically no doubt that the action will be stupendous, though topping an ape riding a horse through a wall of fire while shooting a machine gun is going to be pretty difficult. Even so, the series manages to do what few contemporary blockbusters can: juggle cartoonish insanity with gritty realism and very real emotion. It's got a damn good shot at meeting Fury Road's very high bar.
