20 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Good

11. The Bride!

One of the biggest question marks of 2026 is The Bride! - a revisionist take on Universal's classic 1935 horror film Bride of Frankenstein, set in 1930s Chicago with Jessie Buckley portraying the Bride and Christian Bale co-starring as Frankenstein's monster.

The early word on this one has been all over the place, frankly, with reports last year suggesting that it was test screening poorly, enough that Warner Bros. delayed its release by six months in order to try and "fix" the troubled project.

A large-budget, auteur-led reimagining of a classic IP with an apparent musical element has led some to believe that we might have another Joker: Folie à Deux on our hands here.

But the first trailer for The Bride! honestly looks pretty great, and since when have ever-fickle, ever-conservative test audiences been the barometer of taste?

Conversely, Maggie Gyllenhaal proved herself an adept filmmaker with her debut The Lost Daughter, while Jessie Buckley has a clear knack for seeking out worthy projects, and when has Christian Bale ever not given a full-throated, impossibly committed performance?

The Bride! may end up being messy and not-for-everyone, but it's tough to fully believe the early anti-hype that Gyllenhaal has straight-up laid a big, fat goose egg.
