Despite critics generally praising Sean Harris for his work as the movie's big bad, Solomon Lane, it's tough to see what they were talking about exactly. Harris is a terrific actor in his own right, yet this role just doesn't do him any justice whatsoever: he gets just a few minutes of screen time in the film's first half, and even then, he's relegated to a relatively generic villain role, while his breathy whisper renders him more unintentionally amusing than imposing. M:I has had something of a villain problem ever since the first film (with the exception of the third), and this doesn't really do much to address that. The movie's characters continue to be relatively under-developed, and again, the bad guy is pure cardboard: nothing to see here.
