Even accepting that almost 80 million people voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 Presidential election, it didn't seem like there would be a whole lot of interest in a theatrically released quasi-documentary about his First Lady, Melania, outside of the most unhinged MAGA die-hards.

When you further factor in that the film was produced for an outrageous $40 million, making it the most expensive documentary in history, it faced one hell of a steep climb to profitability.

After all, the era of Michael Moore releasing documentaries that gross over $200 million is long gone - in the age of streaming, it's harder than ever to persuade people to leave the house for a documentary.

And though near-universal critical scorn likely made no impact at all with the target audience, Melania still grossed just $16.5 million, with many cinemas around the world reporting low ticket sales on release weekend.

Yet given that the documentary was distributed by Amazon, they're surely expecting it to perform much better once it releases on their streaming platform.
