15. The Bride!
Maggie Gyllenhaal's bold reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein just had so, so much working against it.
For one, there were months and months of reports about The Bride! suffering through poor test screenings and extensive post-production tinkering as a result, to say nothing of the fact that Gyllenhaal's film was an intentionally off-kilter reworking of the iconic story to ends that alienated more casual genre fans.
Elsewhere there was likely some Frankenstein fatigue given that Guillermo del Toro's successful take on the IP released just a few months prior, and with a massive $90 million budget it just didn't seem likely that enough people would head out to see something so willfully transgressive.
Ultimately The Bride! opened to less than half of industry projections, being beaten out by both Hoppers and Scream 7 before topping out at a disastrous $24 million globally.
While Gyllenhaal's career will probably be fine once she bounces back with another acclaimed lower-budget drama like her debut The Lost Daughter, don't expect her to get a big fat blank cheque like this anytime soon.
