21 Best Films Of The 21st Century By Genre

3. Action - Edge Of Tomorrow

The genre may not have reached the same heights of the epic 80's era, but there has still been a range of strong action films this century. The James Bond franchise produced two excellent entries in Casino Royale and Spyfall, while there was also the truly insane Mad Max: Fury Road and the even more insane The Raid films.

One film that did not receive anywhere near enough credit was the awesome 'Groundhog Day meets Predator' modern day classic that is 2015's Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise delivers a pitch perfect performance as cocky publicist Major William Cage, who finds himself unwittingly on the battlefield against an unstoppable alien threat.

When Cage somehow wakes up a day before his brutal death, he soon figures out that he must team up with legendary Sergeant Rita Vrataski to try and take down the alien threat. The film effortlessly blends the science fiction elements with epic battle sequences, while the chemistry between Cruise and Emily Blunt is dynamite throughout.

Full credit must go to Cruise, who portrays Cage as a cocky wimp to start proceedings, before transitioning into a genuine hero by film's end. Emily Blunt is also outstanding as the take no prisoners poster girl for the human resistance, taking the usual alpha male role and adding some genuine venom. It's great to see a Female actor who actually does the appropriate physical preparation for the role of an action hero to look the part, something that hasn't been the case enough in recent action films.
