Predicted Critical Consensus: "Even with Tom Hooper's occasional directorial missteps, The Danish Girl gives Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander a stellar platform to display their talents." Tom Hooper hasn't directed a movie below 70% on the Tomatometer, so why expect any different here? Plus, with a screenplay adapted from David Ebershoff's award-winning novel and recent Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne starring in another head-turning, doggedly challenging role, the film won't have to work too hard to win over critics. It'll struggle to stir up the same verve that led The King's Speech (94%) to a Best Picture win, and his unconventional directorial style, complete with intentionally off-kilter camera set-ups, proves undeniably divisive, but with powerful, eye-opening and undeniably timely material to work from, expect it to be one of the year's sleeper art-house hits. Whether it'll stir up much Oscar consideration outside of its central performance, however, will remain to be seen...
