2. Singin' in the Rain (1952)

If you strip away all of the musical numbers of this film, headlined by Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds, basically you're left with a ridiculous script about a failed attempt at making talking pictures. But that's exactly why it's the second-greatest movie musical of all time and still evokes a flood of tears besides copious laughter and delight. It's literally brilliant in spite of itself, and aided all the more by a genius dance turn by Cyd Charisse, not to mention Rita Moreno as Zelda Zanders.
