The 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards have now come and gone...in which like 90 obscure foreign journalists are given an inexplicably "important" platform to dish out gold statuettes to the "best" in film and TV. Yes, it's always a lightweight affair compared to the Oscars, but the flipside is that it also takes itself a little less seriously, meaning that the celebrities are typically a little more relaxed, a lot more drunk, and the ceremony as a whole is usually more enjoyable to watch at home. From completely sauced actors to Ricky Gervais' deliciously scathing gags, some unexpected wins and everything in-between, there was plenty here to keep the Globes more than just a stuffy, overlong awards show. Here are 36 WTF moments from the Golden Globes 2016...
36. Ricky Gervais' Savage Opening Monologue
The show kicked off, as ever, with an opening monologue from the host, Ricky Gervais, who undertook hosting duties for his fourth time. Unsurprisingly, he was relentless from the outset, rolling out jokes about Sean Penn (calling him a "snitch"), ripping NBC for not having any Globe nominations tonight, mocking Caitlyn Jenner for "not doing a lot for woman drivers", and highlighting how easy it is to pay for a Golden Globe, just as the producers cut to Harvey Weinstein in the audience. Gervais continued his onslaught, claiming that Roman Polanski called Spotlight (a movie about child molestation in the Catholic Church) "the best date movie ever", and destroyed Adam Sandler's Pixels, saying, "To be fair, The Martian was a lot funnier than Pixels, but then again, so was Schindler's List." Though Hollywood's reception to Gervais hosting has proven divisive in the past, he's brought back time and time again because he ensures good ratings, and it's certainly no bad thing to start the night out by underlining the silliness of the ceremony. Plus, who else would make a joke about putting a Golden Globe up their a**?
