Patrick Stewart became known to American audiences by playing a Frenchman (albeit one with a British accent) on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Perhaps thats why Steve Martin cast him in the role of an antagonistic French maitre d in his surreal satire of L.A. culture. Stewart doesnt go over-the-top with this part like a lesser actor might have. Rather, he comes across as arrogant and condescending without turning into a cartoon. He makes it seem like Martins poor weatherman is pleading for his life instead of simply making a reservation at a fancy restaurant. There are other funny cameos sprinkled throughout the film but this one stands out for being hilarious and somewhat terrifying at the same time.
