5 Incredibly Weird Director Cameos In Their Own Movies

By Dan Wakefield /

1. Wes Craven In Scream

Although he's on screen for all of two seconds, Craven turns the briefest of cameos into a sneaky and surreal in-joke. His 1994 postmodern slasher film Scream is practically a check-list of clichés (albeit deliberately so) yet it offers something new to the canon; how can the genre survive when its characters were raised on the rulebook, regarding the likes of Halloween and Friday the 13th as survival guides? With a masked killer stalking their quiet California town, the students- and staff- of Woodsboro High School have little to do but huddle together in fear. This explains why, when Principal Himbry (Henry Winkler) is alone in his office, he's quick to respond to a knock at the door. He grabs the handle but there's no one there. He tries another door in the hope of catching out his intruder. Still nothing. Assuming the work of cruel pranksters, he mumbles ''Damn little s**ts'', to which a voice, gruff and immediate, replies ''What d'you call me?'' Cut to the janitor cleaning further down the corridor; a man we're sure we've seen somewhere before. That fedora...that red and green striped sweater... they both look familiar. Yes, it's Craven- dressed as his most famous creation, Freddy Krueger from 1984's A Nightmare On Elm Street. What's more, he has even taken his name. For those sharp enough to see through the 'costume' (which, admittedly, is really something of a reward upon a second viewing) it's a wonderfully strange sight gag that you can scarcely believe.
