5 Oscars 2016 Nominations They Got Right (And 5 They Got Wrong)

3. That Stunning Cinematography Group

Another of the categories you could make a case for The Force Awakens deserving a nomination in is Best Cinematography, because the film looks absolutely stunning. However, choosing the film it should replace would be a tricky task, so there's little point trying. Emmanuel Lubezki is a gift from the filmmaking gods, and he'll almost certainly make it a third consecutive win for his work on The Revenant (having previously won for Birdman and Gravity, neither of which can be argued about). However, the whole category is actually incredibly impressive. There's Ed Lachman, who made Carol's beauty really shine; John Seale, given the considerable task of shooting the insanity that was Mad Max: Fury Road; Robert Richardson, who captured some stunning landscapes but also managed to make a cabin both intimate and expansive in The Hateful Eight; and of course Roger Deakins, who worked on the thrilling Sicario - it's his 13th nomination, and it's probably going to prove just as unlucky as the previous 12.
