Before I get bombarded with angry fanboy hate messages in the comments section, first know that I didn't not enjoy The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises. In fact, The Avengers is probably my most enjoyable film of the year so far and The Dark Knight Rises, though it was no The Dark Knight, was not that far behind. If you have also read any of my other posts you will know that I am a huge Joss Whedon fan, so if I anger any Whedon fans, just know that I am one of you. Having had time to process the summers biggest movies, I have to say that both films have many major flaws and painfully big plot holes, and there are many reasons I would argue, that in years time, neither The Avengers nor The Dark Knight Rises will be considered film classics. They are both brilliant pieces of entertainment for sure, but are they both brilliant films... not quite. Certainly neither film will win an Academy Award. Spider-Man 2 is possibly my favorite superhero film of all time... I also hold a place in my heart for Batman Returns and, dare I say it to be ridiculed later, Superman Returns... and it goes without question the brilliance that was The Dark Knight. The reason all of these films work, but particularly Spider-Man 2, are the reasons why The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises don't quite deserve classic status, and are also points Whedon really needs to consider when crafting the second Avengers movie. Even Whedon himself admits that The Avengers wasn't a brilliant film... very good, but not brilliant. The following list explores the main five reasons why Spider-Man 2 has held up so well since its 2004 release, and why The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises probably won't. Had they included a little more of these elements that Spider-Man 2 got so right, they would have been much better films for it. Feel free to disagree with me all you like in the comments section, but when I left the cinema after I saw Spider-Man 2, I only remember being satisfied. When I left the cinema after seeing The Avengers, but especially The Dark Knight Rises, I had many, many critiques. Here are just a few.
