5 Totally Over-Rated Directors Working In Film Today
Some directors are lucky- make a successful film at the beginning of your career and you can (at least for a while) ride on that wave for a good number of years regardless of whether or not the many films released since then have been any good. M Night Shyamalan for example is one of these directors. Early on in his career he made some truly wonderful films: The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Sings where all very intelligent, beautifully directed, incredibly engrossing works of art. Even his film he made after Signs; The Village, is in my opinion very good though I know many others would disagree with me. This great success he had early on allowed him to be almost forgiven when he made Lady in The Water, almost forgiven but not really when he made The Happening, and by the time he got around the The Last Airbender the wave he was so used to riding on was now a puddle, and he'd be lucky to regain any of the respect or love he had because of the truly brilliant Sixth Sense. You could even make the argument that Spielberg and Scorsese have lost their touch in recent years, although due to some truly incredible films early on, their waves are massive and they could ride off of them to the grave.
Before you start sharpening your pitch forks and lighting your torches remember what over-rated means. None of the directors on this list are necessarily bad- most in fact are arguably among the best- but over-rated they all most certainly are. Not one of these directors in my opinion at least deserves the overwhelming credit and love they get from both the critics but most often the audience. To put this list into perspective note that in my opinion the most over-rated musical act ever are The Beatles and the most over-rated writer of all time is certainly Shakespeare. Obviously these two are both great, but do the deserve all the respect they are constantly getting; not by a mile. Click "Next" to start with my number 5...
