8. (Old Man) Wolverine

Status: Confirmed Due: March 2nd 2017 Key Players: Hugh Jackman reprises his role for (allegedly) the last time, while Sir Patrick Stewart is said to have a significant part. James Mangold returns to the directing chair, which is good news after The Wolverine. What€™s It About: Rather wonderfully, Jackman has hinted that the film will be based on Old Man Logan, the fan favourite comic book arc. A close adaptation would be impossible, given that Marvel own the rights to pretty much all of the supporting characters in the story. But it could still work: Mangold could simply use the idea of having a retired Wolverine dragged back into active duty in a Dystopian future ravaged by the rise of supervillains. The presence of Charles Xavier could also tantalisingly suggest that the comic€™s tragic tale of Wolverine€™s accidental slaughter of his fellow X-Men under Mysterio€™s control could play some part too. Why We Should Care: Because Jackman can basically do no wrong as Wolverine, and the idea of a tragic Dystopian future with the character ruined by guilt and unwillingly dragged out of retirement suggests a wonderful Last Gunfighter sort of feel. He€™s always had something of Roosyer Cogburn about him, and that would be the perfect end to his arc, before someone younger (and probably inferior) is inevitably cast to replace Jackman.
