70 years ago, on June 6th 1944, a huge amphibious and airborne Allied force landed on the coast of Northern France intent on making a certain Mr. Hitler very unhappy. The meticulously planned operation included numerous beach assaults, naval bombardments, air strikes and parachute drops - all on a scale never seen before. Effectively code-named "D-Day," the invasion saw the beginning of the end for the Nazi occupation of Europe, and can be considered symbolic of WW2 as a whole. The Normandy Landings were pretty dramatic, and as with most dramatic events of WW2, it wasn't long before Hollywood began to re-capture the thrilling stories of that day. From daring paratroopers to bloody beaches, D-Day has been subject to both factual and semi-fictional portrayals onscreen. So 70 years on from the actual event, here is a list of the best onscreen depictions of that fateful day...

6. 36 Hours

The last thing the Allies wanted was the Germans finding out exactly where the invasion would take place. 36 Hours is a fictional story surrounding the immediate build up to June 6th, as an injured American (James Garner) is tricked into thinking the war has been over for years, so that his Nazi captors can find out vital information.
