Jean Spangler was a model and an aspiring actress, having bit-part roles in the likes of musical When My Baby Smiles at Me and comedy Chicken Every Sunday. However, she is best known for being at the centre of one of the biggest mysteries in Hollywood's history. In 1949, just as she was starting to break into the movies, the 26-year-old disappeared. She left her daughter with her sister-in-law, claiming she was going to see her ex-husband, and then on to a film shoot., however, the ex claims that he never saw her, and there were no shoots scheduled that day. A couple of days later her purse was found in Griffith Park, LA, and had been torn at the strap. Inside was a seemingly unfinished note, which read: "Kirk, Cant wait any longer. Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this way while mother is away. She had been filming a small part in the Kirk Douglas film Young Man with a Horn at the time of her disappearance, however Douglas contacted police before he was even a suspect to state he had no involvement in her disappearance. Few other clues were found, although it was mooted that she'd been pregnant, and Dr Scott was a man who carried out abortions (then illegal) for money. She was also allegedly spotted with gangster David Ogul, an associate of LA crime boss Mickey Cohen, some time after she went missing. However, to this day she hasn't been found, and the case remains open.
