After 20 years of waiting, the long-awaited sequel to 1996's blockbuster classic Independence Day is finally here. Sure, there's no Will Smith this time and the film wasn't even screened for U.S. critics, but it's still hard not to be a little bit excited, right?

Well, Independence Day: Resurgence is now out in the wild, so both fans and critics alike have been forming a consensus that the movie is...kind of OK? In short, it's not the disaster you may have been expecting nor the awesome follow-up you were probably hoping for: it's a mix of terrible writing, fun nostalgia and outstanding, larger-than-life action.
