It's rare that a director will admit to their mistakes. Pride is a terrible sin, and when so many people have put so much work into making a movie, it's difficult to admit that you got something wrong.

Usually, when a director does express regret, it's usually in an interview a good number of years later, and that's that. Everyone moves on, and it's forgotten about, or at least forgiven.

Sometimes, though, the person in charge of the film will make a mistake - or mistakes - that gnaw away at them until they just have to do something about it, whether it's immediately, decades later, or continuous meddling over the years, going above and beyond in the name of 'fixing' their own work, with some seriously mixed results.
