Body of Lies started off promising. Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe had built up a respectable catalog of work together since the success of Gladiator in 2000 and with Leonardo DiCaprio on board, the studio could have had a big hit on their hands. Unfortunately, the majority of America seemed to stop caring about contemporary war films a long time ago and even the double whammy of Crowe and DiCaprio did little to draw fans to their local cinemas. For the part of Ed Hoffman, a CIA veteran and DiCaprio's boss, Russel Crowe gained a bit of weight. Correction. He gained a LOT, bulking up to 257 lbs for the role. In later interviews, Crowe admitted it took him over a year to return back to his normal body weight. The dedication to the character of Hoffman was admirable, but was it really necessary? I'm sure the five people who saw the film would have forgiven Crowe for just wearing a bit of padding.
