Director David Ayer is no stranger to the kind of film that Suicide Squad is going to be. His last two were the Schwarzenegger-starring Sabotage, about a team of morally dubious DEA Agents, and Fury, the World War II actioner about a morally dubious tank crew. Sound familiar? Although Sabotage was a flop, critically and commercially, Ayer did provide generous servings of grit, grime and badass dialogue. The action was also filmed dirty and street-level, giving an authenticity to the shootouts even if they were slightly too blood-soaked to be considered realistic. Fury was an underrated film that more than anything sold the bond between a squad of salty guys who not only worked together but co-habited a tank. Suicide Squad's environment might be different but the dynamic between the characters should be very similar, and the director obviously has experience. Beyond that, if he can bring the same kind of believability to the burgeoning bond between the Suicide Squad members that he did the crew in Fury, then there shouldn't be a problem buying these characters as a team that works together in the end. We know that they must do eventually, thanks to that great walking-together-down-a-war-torn-street shot in the trailer.
