7 Reasons Why Wanda Maximoff Will Be The MCU’s Greatest Threat Yet
2. Two Wandas?
With much of Phase 4 being devoted to exploring the multiverse in films like Spider-Man 3, The Multiverse of Madness and in Disney+ shows like WandaVision, Loki, and What If?, you have to wonder – why now?
Perhaps the answer to that question lies in Kevin Feige wanting to bring the X-Men, including a mutant Scarlet Witch, from another universe into this world to cause some double, double toil and trouble?
Without the multiverse, how were the X-Men going to suddenly appear without fans thinking the MCU had jumped the shark? You could probably get around the problem by pretending Charles Xavier had just wiped the minds of Earth’s inhabitants, but that’s probably not the most sophisticated way of solving a problem.
There’s also the issue of Sony’s Spiderverse. Sony clearly wants all Spider-Man properties to be connected to the MCU, whereas Marvel are obviously not so keen. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Introduce a multiverse and not only can you connect Sony’s properties to the MCU without having films like Venom and Morbius exist in the same universe, but you can also bring the X-Men into the main universe from another universe where mutants have always existed.
But what could get the X-Men from one universe stuck in an entirely different universe? Perhaps a multiverse version of The Scarlet Witch will say “no more mutants”, and send the mutants from her universe to meet The Scarlet Witch from the MCU’s main timeline.
