79. Open Your Eyes (2001) - Alejandro Amenábar"A very handsome man finds the love of his life, but he suffers an accident and needs to have his face rebuilt by surgery after it is severely disfigured". Abres Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) is the Spanish movie in which Cameron Crowe's 2001 hit Vanilla Sky was based on. The movie stars Eduardo Noriega and Penelope Cruz who would later find herself playing the same character in Vanilla Sky. The original movie is very similar in terms of plot to the American remake in that it involves a good looking guy who has his face horribly transfigured sending him on a downward spiral which culminates in his arrest for the murder of Sofia. Open Your Eyes is a fantastic achievement from a young 26 year old director who said the movie was loosely based on the concept of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. The success of this movie, allowed him to travel to America and shoot The Others, which isn't a bad movie in itself. The movie is about the human psyche and our notion of reality. What's real and what's just our imagination? It's about love and the horrible sickening feeling when we think it might be lost. Open Your Eyes also works as a gritty crime or film noir movie, and is superbly acted by the two leads. Open Your Eyes has as many twists and turns as any great thriller, but the way they are "spliced" in to the picture, by the time you get to the films conclusion....the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle come together brillantly.
