3. Eugène Green - The Son Of Joseph

U.S.-born French Eugène Green is a multiartist. He is a dramaturge, writer, and founded the Théâtre de la Sapience, or Theatre of Sapience, which tries to restore French baroque period declamation and technique on stage.

Furthermore, his films are edified with classic literature, music, painting and architecture, straight out of a plane where these arts gather in their purest states; including cinema itself (he counts Robert Bresson and Yasujirō Ozu among his major influences).

In The Son of Joseph, Green went for a biblical structure adapted to modern times. Vincent, a young Parisian, finds out who his father is against her mother wishes, and, inspired by The Sacrifice of Isaac, intends to carry out the exact reverse situation: to “sacrifice” his progenitor, a selfish publisher.

The movie fortunately derives unrealistic and allegorical from its suggestive premise, featuring elegant framing, lots of neat shots-countershots, beautiful locations and great acting that contributes to Green’s spellbinding time-honoured style.
