Takashi Miike is the king of crazy. Don€™t believe me? Watch Sukiyaki Western Dango. So it€™s only fitting he tops this list with climatic battle of (what I consider) his best film to date: 13 Assassins. The film starts off quite restrained by Miike standards (which is still pretty extreme so be warned this film isn€™t for the weak of stomach). Miike does a great job of building the stakes and characters. A sadistic lord, Matsudaira Naritsugu, is poised to become Shogun. If this happens Naritsugu will usher in an era of murder and chaos. It€™s up to a battle-hardened Samurai Shinzaemon and twelve of his compatriots to take down Naritsugu and 200 hundred of his guards. Shinzaemon sets a trap by buying a town and turning it into a village-sized death maze. When Naritsugu and his guards arrive, unabashed insanity ensues. In a massive battle taking up 45 minutes of a 141 minute film, Shinzaemon uses every trick in the book to achieve the impossible from letting loose a storm of flaming bulls, arrows, collapsing buildings, and an endless supply of Samurai swords. Miike creates a maelstrom of chaos that will have you cringing and cheering in equal measures. There you have it: three films that achieve that extra level of crazy and earned the right to be called bloody & insane.
