8. Mads Mikkelsen Plays An Empire Scientist Who Defects In Rogue One
Though we know the basic set-up of Rogue One, there have been very few story details revealed; it focuses on the theft of the Death Star plans... that's about it. But one exciting theory purports to reveal the first piece of specific narrative information; Mads Mikkelsen is playing the lead scientist responsible for the creation of the Death Star.

It's Mikkelsen's character's smarts that enable the superweapon project to be completed, but he becomes a sort of Robert Oppenheimer-esque figure when he realises what he's done (famously, Oppenheimer lamented his involvement with the atomic bomb, quoting Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds). Giving the person responsible for building the Death Star a weapon that can literally destroy worlds a back story and conscience would be extremely effective. The theory goes on to say that Mikkelsen's character decides to defect from the Empire and become a rebel with the help of his daughter, which would make a lot of sense when it comes to the Rebels deciding to steal the weapon's plans.
