8 Films That Were Supposed To End The Series (But Got Sequels Anyway)
2. Shrek Forever After
How long until the next one: TBD
Number of movies after this: TBD
How they tried to end it: Everyone lives happily ever after
Shrek was a movie that didn't even need one sequel, so it was a huge relief when Dreamworks announced that Shrek 4 would be the last installment. Though the official title was Shrek Forever After, all the posters advertised it as Shrek: The Final Chapter. Maybe they realized calling a movie The Final Chapter is basically a guarantee that it won't be the end.
Despite all the "final chapter" nonsense, though, Dreamworks has already confirmed Shrek is coming back. CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said that they just wanted to give these characters a rest, but "I think you can be confident that we'll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We're not finished, and more importantly, neither is he." So he's fully aware that all the "Final Chapter" marketing was a total lie.
In that case a more accurate title would have been Shrek: The Final Chapter Before A Short Break And Then Another Sequel.
