2. If Setting A Scene In A Foreign Land, Please Try To Get It Right
Offending 'Vs' Movie: Godzilla: Final Wars Okay, this is a minor one, but it may still be worth keeping in mind. When Toho decided to officially retire Godzilla after fifty years, they conceived 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars as the ultimate final showdown between the King of the Monsters and just about every other monster he had ever faced before. It was only natural that such an epic showdown would be staged on a literally global scale, with kaiju smackdowns taking place all over the world. However, in one particular sequence set in good old New York, New York, director Ryuhei Kitamura and co decided to throw in a couple of incidental comedy characters before bringing in Rodan to rain fire on the city streets. They also decided to give those incidental characters dialogue. The result is an utterly cringe-worthy exercise in urban American cliche, as a mack daddy pimp in a sunglasses, Superfly hat and ankle-length fur coat pulls a gun on a cop about to tow his pink Cadillac, exclaiming, "This right here, it a hand-cannon, it gonna blow yo' ass all the way back to Jersey!" Who knows, perhaps the Japanese filmmakers fancied getting a little revenge after seeing the way Hollywood has portrayed their culture over the years. Either way, given that the action in Batman V Superman is expected to be mostly confined to Gotham and Metropolis, we needn't worry about it too much about anything similar occurring. Still, it seems fair to assume Justice League will play out across a larger map, so let's just hope any scenes set in other lands do a better job of representing their respective cultures.
