3. Sweeney Todd

What The Trailer Promised:

A dark film about Johnny Depp murdering innocents and turning them into pies in 19th century London.

What We Got:

Pretty much that, but also a musical. The trailer did a lot to hide the fact that Sweeney Todd has a lot of singing in it. A LOT of singing.

You’d think the fact that Sweeney Todd had been a hit Broadway musical for years would clue people in to that but a large proportion of the audience were taken aback by folks repeatedly bursting into song and dance in their gritty, period horror film.

With the trailer only including a couple of seconds of Depp singing (and mainly talk-singing at that) it’s not hard to see how some people left cinemas extremely confused.
