To the everyday moviegoer, a director's job might seem overblown on a film. Sure, they are in charge, but ultimately don't the script, actors, VFX, producers and every other crew member shape the final product? Well, yes, of course, but the guiding hand of a single individual makes the film's vision coherent, and you can always sense their presence.

Certain directors excel at bringing their flicks together, which gives them a strong creative identity and makes it obvious when you're witnessing their trademarks. Thanks to this, it's easy to see the potential in certain directors taking on specific projects, as they seem tailor-made for them.

The following eight combinations of directors and films are pitch-perfect, as the style of the material, the context of the directors and star power align perfectly. These are movies that the coming filmmakers need to tackle at some point, as they would light the flicks on fire and bring the best possible credentials to the job.

Whether they've expressed an interest in these projects or not varies, but one thing's for sure, and that's that they're made for each other.

8. James Gunn - Flash Gordon

James Gunn is currently riding high regarding critical success right now thanks to The Suicide Squad. Of course, it's a shame that the movie's box office returns can't say the same, but it's still safe to say that his creative hand has never been stronger. The man was born to make comic-book movies, and perhaps it's time for him to dip his toes into something far removed from Marvel/DC.

Most people know Flash Gordon from the epic and cheesy 1980s Sci-Fi flick, adapted from the comic strip of the same name. It's the tale of an all American quarterback who is taken into space and given the responsibility of saving the world from annihilation. It's fun, goofy and full of charm, which is precisely what Gunn does best.

The release of Guardians of the Galaxy even halted the development of a Flash Gordon remake helmed by Matthew Vaughn, showing just how similar the projects were. Gunn created the perfect modern exploration of the comedic space opera, so imagine what he could do with this classic property.
