8 New Awards Categories That Would Make The Oscars Better

8. Best Achievement In Audience Appreciation

Right off the bat, this one is difficult to award. But somewhat critical.

The Academy tried to introduce a similar category a couple years ago with an Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film award. The criteria and reason for the accolade went down about as well as balloons filled with bricks, but the niche message still stands.

Celebrating a popular film that audiences propped up to be successful should be acknowledged by the Academy. Such a prestige ceremony behind films most of the general public haven't seen yet doesn't make for good live television, so maybe creating a criteria and category based around films that define the year is the way to go?

Then again, had the award been introduced this year we can be sure Avengers: Endgame would have been the front-runner simply by profit and popularity. But maybe something that defines the zeitgeist at the time should be acknowledged?

Films do a great job of reflecting the consensus mood of a generation, and when we look back at previous Best Picture winners, ask yourself honestly how many of them you would actually re-watch, and even worse how many of them are poorly dated now?

The number might be shockingly higher than you think.
