8 Plot Threads To Continue In Captain Marvel 2

A sequel seems inevitable, but what might it be about?

Captain Marvel soared to the top of the box office with a thunderous release, and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. The MCU is a well oiled machine, and sequels are almost always a given; but when the movie has proven to be as big a juggernaut as Captain Marvel, it’s inevitable.

With that in mind, there’s a lot of plot threads to pick up from the first movie. Even regardless of any potential time travel in the upcoming Avengers movies, Captain Marvel’s retro 90s setting means that it’s relatively free to do what it wants, so long as it doesn’t zoom ahead to the beginning of the MCU.

Though there are so many amazing storylines from the comics that Marvel could turn to, this list isn’t looking at that especially. Instead, it’s the loose ends from the first movie that a sequel could tie up.

A blank canvas without having to worry about tangling the chronology is rarity for the movies, and a hugely exciting one at that. Endgame is getting all the focus right now, but with sequels for Spider-Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Guardians and likely Captain Marvel on the horizon, the future looks very bright indeed.

8. Recruiting The Avengers

Captain America’s debut movie was subtitled The First Avenger, and Iron Man 2 centred around recruiting Tony Stark, but neither of them were actually the first one on the team. Black Widow was already part of the team, infiltrating Stark’s staff to get a read on him, while Hawkeye is an agent supervising Mjolnir during the first Thor movie.

Both of those have a rich history in SHIELD, and are clearly deeply trusted by Nick Fury. Based on his discovery of a universe so much larger than he’d ever thought in Captain Marvel, he’s not just going to be sitting around waiting for the next superhero to turn up over two decades later.

Black Widow, Hawkeye and numerous others became part of Fury’s inner circle after Captain Marvel, and if the sequel keeps some links to Earth, this recruitment could be shown.

There’s talk of various spin offs and standalones for these characters anyway, plus we’ve already had extensive examination of Hydra’s insidiously invading SHIELD. However, a more ‘boots in the ground’ approach, showing one or both of the pair during their early missions could add a lot of depth to their backstories.
