8 Reasons It's Near Impossible To Make A Great Standalone Hulk Movie
4. Making The Hulk Semi-Sentient Doesn't Work

One of the ways that Joss Whedon tried to make the Hulk work in The Avengers was to throw him a bone and allow him to interact somewhat sentiently with the other characters, because - c'mon - we all wanted to see the Avengers working together without the Hulk trying to murder his teammates. But I found this to be more frustrating than anything, because we were given two conflicting versions of the Hulk without explanation. When the Hulk is unleashed on the S.H.I.E.L.D. airship, he goes insane and tries to kill everyone - true to character, at least. But when he's facing off against those aliens later on in New York, he's suddenly up for a bit of team work? Whedon doesn't explain why or how this change occurs (perhaps that was best), but it doesn't play fair with the Hulk persona. The Hulk gets to be that strong because he's totally unpredictable - occasionally allowing him to join in with a team doesn't make sense when he was going ape an hour before.
