8 Tame Movies Unfairly Given An R-Rating

2. The King's Speech (2010)

A hugely contentious issue upon release, The King Speech was slapped with an R-rating for one brief scene in which King George VI (Colin Firth) is helped through speech therapy by Dr. Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) by saying the F-word 15 times in fast succession. The BBFC originally gave the film a 15, but after public outcry, and a brilliant point raised by director Tom Hooper - that the far more violent and unpleasant Salt and Casino Royale both recieved 12As - they relented and gave the film a 12A despite the large number of F-bombs, claiming that the context was important. The word was not used in a sexual or derisory context, and being such a miniscule portion of the film - and one that is absolutely played for laughs - it would be inappropriate to give the film a 15 on this basis alone. The MPAA, however, did not agree, and despite the Weinsteins appealing, the R-rating was upheld. Roger Ebert subsequently branded the rating "inexplicable", deeming the film a great one for teens. A censored PG-13 rated version was released in American cinemas, though thankfully this version will reportedly not see the light of day on home video.
