Stop me if I'm being a little excessive here, but I swear it seems sometimes that Hollywood hates video games and the people that play them. Is it really just fate that every great video game movie that would attract a large audience with no apparent downsides (Peter Jackson's Halo) gets shelved in development hell while ever other bubblegum piece of BS gets made by the likes of Uwe Boll or is there some kind of conspiracy behind it all? There are so many video games out there that wouldn't make good movies; they would make incredible ones. Yet every time we get our hopes up (Bioshock, Duke Nukem, etc.) the dreams are always crushed with disappointing what-could-have-beens. Not only does Hollywood need to swallow whatever seeming prejudice it seems to hold against video games and recognize the potential so many games have as great source material for films they also have a lot of apologies to make as well, starting with Super Mario Bros. back in 1993, the first of many atrocities to come. And playing it cautious by taking a game' story and melting it down into something completely bland so it will appeal to a wide enough audience as a blockbuster tentpole film is no excuse. Yes, here's looking at you, Prince of Persia. Neither are truly great films that have video game themes in them such as Tron and Wreck It Ralph. Does not count and don't even mention Gerald Butler in Gamer. Them's fightin' words.
