When Hunger Games star Jena Malone was first cast in Batman V Superman, it was widely reported and speculated that she had been chosen to play Carrie Kelly, the female Robin from The Dark Knight Returns. However, we've since heard that the actress is actually taking on the role of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon and the woman who took on the mantle of Batgirl in the comics. It's unclear what capacity she'll appear in (one rumour points to a flashback where she's shot and left wheelchair bound by The Joker), but regardless of whether or not she dons a costume, chances are her role will be small. It makes sense then that she'll have more screentime in The Batman as either Batgirl or Oracle, and that is no doubt going to be used in order to set up the recently rumoured Birds of Prey movie. After all, with Black Canary being lined up for an appearance in Justice League, it makes perfect sense that The Batman will continue setting up plot threads for this spinoff, especially as so many members of the Birds of Prey hail from Batman's corner of the DC Universe. So, whether she's Batgirl or Oracle, expect to see Batman's movie give her a greater role and set her up as a key character in this world.
