What Is It? It's the sequel to J.J. "Star Something" Abrams' Star Trek reboot from a couple of years back, a film franchise he was fully invested in until something better came along. Which, in this case, was Star Wars. Why You'll Say You'll See It... "Oh, man, this is gonna be so freakin' sweet. I mean, Benedict Cumberbatch as the bad guy... a huge battle in war-torn London... and all the CGI you can shake George Lucas at! Beam me up, I say. Beam. Me. Up." Why You Really Want To See It...Star Trek fans: this doesn't concern you. You want to see this thing anyway, 'cause that's why you're a Star Trek fan. As for the rest of us - movie-goers who have only dipped into Star Trek since Abrams made the first one of these in 2000 - we're officially using this movie as a sort of "testing the water" vehicle for Star Wars: Episode VII. Sorry, but whether or not this sequel is a knockout or a raging disappointing is what we're using to weigh our faith. So, this is it, JJ. Sure, you've made a whole bunch of other good movies, but this one is your Star Wars audition, given that it's likely going to be the closet in terms of budget and production aesthetics as Episode VII. Do not, as they say at a successful billion dollar business I just fashioned, f*ck this up.
