8 Upcoming Movies No One Asked For (But Will Probably See)
2. Aquaman
DC spent much of 2018 reeling from the disappointment of last year's Justice League. Just last month, Henry Cavill left the role of Superman with rumors that Ben Affleck's exit will soon follow. Some fans have even called for the cinematic universe to be abandoned and completely rebooted. Suffering from a lack of cohesion, DC always seems to be in transition.
Aquaman, starring Jason Mamoa, is an opportunity to steady the ship. DC made an interesting choice in hiring James Wan, the man behind the Insidious, Saw, Conjuring and Annabelle franchises, as Director. The involvement of Wan, an authority in horror but noob in the comic book genre, may be a sign the studio is ready to take some much needed creative risks.
Joining Mamoa will be Amber Heard as Mera, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna and Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master. The movie will also introduce Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta and the images of him are excitingly accurate.
Despite some warranted reservations among general audiences, DC has an extremely loyal fan base out there that wants this universe to thrive. Aquaman will command much of the attention in a December that will be missing a Star Wars movie for the first time since 2014.
If Aquaman mirrors the critical and financial success of 2017's Wonder Woman, the studio could really build some positive momentum. 2019 will feature Shazam!, with the trailer being a highlight of SDCC, and the guaranteed hit Wonder Woman 1984. The DCEU needs another success to get the ball rolling again and it could be Aquaman.
