8 Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies That Could Be Better Than Star Wars: The Last Jedi
4. Annihilation
Annihilation is one of the weirdest books about weird science you'll ever read, so next year's movie adaptation is likely to be, well, weird.
It's also hugely anticipated, given that this is the second directorial effort from Ex Machina filmmaker Alex Garland.
Jeff Vandermeer's novel is a haunting sci-fi mystery which follows an expedition of four women into 'Area X', a part of the US that's been quarantined due to abnormal activity.
Previous missions to the location all ended in tragedy, one with a mass suicide, another in a barrage of gunfire as the group turned on each other, and a third with the explorers all dying from cancer shortly after their return.
An ensemble cast comprising Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac will make up the intrepid explorers. Just don't get too attached to any of them, because it doesn't sound like too many return from Area X.
