9 Biggest Movies Coming Out In July 2018
9. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!
Ten years may have led you to forget, but the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! was actually the fifth highest-grossing film of 2008, bringing in over $600million worldwide. It also held the title of both the highest-grossing live-action musical and highest-grossing movie directed by a woman, though of those accolades were taken this year by Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman respectively. Still, not bad for a film that opened in the US against The Dark Knight.
Given its box office success and widespread popularity at the time, you'd think they'd have tried ironing out a sequel far quicker. But it's been ten years now, and demand for a sequel hasn't exactly been shaking the world, especially since there's no stage musical to even use as a source of adaptation; all we've got are a bunch of ABBA songs they couldn't cram into the original.
Where could the story even go? What else is there to really tell about the characters of Mamma Mia!? Enough for most of the original cast to return, apparently. Musicals have evolved a lot in the past ten years, and the time may have passed for a sequel to a musical even most fans of would admit isn't exactly worthy of continuing.
Then again, if it does fail, hopefully at least does so in a spectacularly wrong, Love Never Dies sort of way.
