9 Films To Watch On Netflix UK In July (And 1 To Avoid)

These films are all new to Netflix UK this month.

Every month the conveyor belt of Netflix content gets a healthy jolt. July is no different with plenty of new films and TV shows being added to the streaming service. While season 3 of Stranger Things is another television hit, let’s take a look at the movies which are either already available or will be shortly.

Uploads of old films and brand-new original content will be included. As always, new content is more of a gamble until there is consensus as to whether it is any good. Older films on the other hand carry with them a wealth of reviews and, in the case of many films on this list, several awards.

The goal of these lists would usually be to include must watch movies from a spread of genres to ensure there is something for everyone. Unfortunately, this month the best picks are mostly super serious biographies or comedies. But they are very good super serious biographies and very good comedies.

In terms of not so good films, there is one clear stand-out that almost certainly should be avoided.

10. AVOID: After

Arriving July 12, 2019

Based on a novel by Anna Todd, this young adult romantic drama was initially released in April and is soon to be made available on Netflix. The story centres around college freshmen Tessa Young who has everything figured out until she meets bad boy Hardin Scott.

Currently the movie holds 5.5 on IMDB and a 14% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (from 29 reviews). It has been described as boring, predictable and just bad.

From the trailer alone, you can see After is basically twilight but without any vampires. While there were things to enjoy in the Stephenie Meyer inspired blood sucking saga (which are also on Netflix), the recipe becomes far less enjoyable if you take away the most interesting ingredient. To make matters worse, the already defanged After then adds a sprinkling of 50 Shades of Grey just to ensure maximum vomit potential. Avoid.
