Now to showcase the first of two Australian based productions that although may have made an impact here in the land down under, never really was heard of outside of our illustrious island. The Time Guardian stars Australian "television actor" Tom Burlinson and is set in the distant future that is the year 4039. An entire city of human survivors from the Neutron Wars who can travel through time and space are transported to the South Australian outback in 1988 to prepare for a battle against the "Jen Diki," a race of cybernetic organisms intent on wiping out the last traces of humanity. I assume this was an attempt to create a new Australian movie franchise not unlike Star Wars or the recently wrapped up Mad Max trilogy. Did I mention that not only did it star American actor Dean Stockwell (of Quantum Leap fame) but a scantily dressed, extremely sexy and still young Carrie Fisher in all of her glory? That alone deserves at least one viewing. This film is B-grade sci-fi cinematic gold not unlike some of the lesser known titles from the 60s and 70s that did not fall under the name "Star Wars." Bad acting, cheesy special effects, a futuristic setting with a marauding force of unknown origins, what more do you want for a film from this genre? The irony is that upon researching this article I found that this was the first production of a massive 10 picture deal as part of now defunct but iconic movie production company Hemdale Film Corporation, a deal which fell through only after this single film thanks to the company going bankrupt. You may remember their cinematic logo from films like "The Terminator" and "Platoon." I wonder if this now long forgotten film had anything to do with that? Most likely.
