9 Harry Potter Plot Holes That Actually Have Simple Fixes

9. Snape Doesn't Check His Potions Cupboard In Year 2- The Chamber Of Secrets/The Goblet Of Fire

Plot Hole: In Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets the troublesome trio take it upon themselves to solve the mystery of the Heir of Slytherin. Now this is not much of a deviation from their usual antics, but what IS out of character, is that they break some MAJOR school rules to do so.

When our heroes set their sights on Draco as a possible suspect, they hatch a plan to brew Polyjuice potion to trick him into confession. This plan leads them to steal from good ol' Professor Sour-face's inventory.

For some reason though, Snape never seems to catch on! You might think it was because he doesn't know what is in his inventory, or that maybe he doesn't check it, but a scene in Goblet of Fire completely destroys that theory. When Barty Crouch Jr starts stealing ingredients to make his own Polyjuice potion, Snape is quick to jump suspiciously on Harry in his usual fashion.

So, Snape does check his potions cupboard! But why didn't he notice when the exact same ingredients went missing during Harry's second year?

Answer: Snape may have always been a paranoid man, especially of young Harry, but it is during the fourth book and film that Snape's past starts to really catch up to him.

With his dark mark growing more vivid each day, the imminent arrival of Lord Voldemort had Death Eater and double agent Snape on edge.

The stress this causes Snape would drive anyone into an extreme sense of paranoia and cause them to do irrational things, like overzealously checking his potions stock or threatening a 14 year old student with truth potion... I think we can all agree Professor Snape was not in his right mind here.

I wouldn't call this his rock bottom, but it was definitely a low point for our marmite-like professor.
