Red River is already held in fairly high regard when it comes to the western genre, but I think it would have been hailed as something close to a bonafide masterpiece if it weren't for one particularly silly scene that only ever feels like something of a lame studio compromise - one that happens to take place right at the end, and kind of unravels the entire movie. River, which stars John Wayne and Montgomery Clift as a feuding father and his adopted son, is a brilliant epic from start to finish: tough and brutal, it concerns cattle drivers as they head out on a long and dangerous mission across Texas. Over the entire course of the movie, Wayne and Clift clash and bicker and eventually vow to kill one another... by the end of the flick, the stage is set for a truly dark and memorable finale... and we can't wait to see how it's gonna play out. But it doesn't happen. Instead, as the two men finally come up against one another, Tess (a female character whose inclusion in the picture is also massively ill-judged) steps in, breaks the two men up, and scolds them like they're a couple of children. As a result, Wayne and Clift laugh it off and make up: the whole movie has been building to this confrontation and that's it? The original story on which Red River was based, of course, ended with the Clift's character shooting Wayne's character dead. In the context of the movie, that's the right ending. Instead we spend two hours building to a climax that is watered down for no real reason. With this ending in place, the rest of the movie just feels like a complete and utter waste of time - ruined, if you will. Which single misjudged scenes that ruined movies can you name?
