How did we get here? How did it come to this?

These are surely the questions DC and WB are asking themselves this morning, as the official tally has now come in, with Justice League ranked as the lowest-grossing film in the DCEU, internationally. To put that into perspective, Man of Steel, the starting point of this universe and previous holder of the lowest-grossing award, grossed $668 million back in 2013. Justice League made over $20 million less than that.

A live-action Justice League film is the kind of thing people had been waiting their entire lives to see. It had the promise of a four-quadrant blockbuster that could draw in fans from every age-group and demographics. It is a film centered on a team of individuals, composed of some of the most legendary characters in comic book history. Heck, even Batman alone had already had one of the biggest blockbuster success stories of the past few decades just a few years earlier.

So why and how did a movie with so much promise and decades of built-up anticipation fail so miserably? Its production was plagued by a litany of problems, but these are the main ones that caused the film to fall so short.

9. It Was Forgettable

Basically, the film itself was bland and unimpressive.

The film's story was compiled of numerous cliches audiences had seen in thousands of films prior, its characters were watered down versions of themselves, its CGI-action offered little to no actual action beats. Instead, the film opted to simply bludgeon audiences into submission with endless battle sequences that were poorly edited and went nowhere.

The result was a film that lacked any and all compelling elements and left even its biggest fans with little to walk out of the theater marinating in. Regardless of personal opinion, Batman v. Superman at least had definable traits and action sequences which kept people arguing about it for well over a year. Justice League has already faded from pop culture because there simply isn't much to discuss.

Defining moments for the film were few and far between, resulting in a film that had little to offer.
