9 Sci-Fi Movies That Flopped Hard In 2022
Never mind beyond, these movies didn't even come close to infinity.
2022 has been a great year for fans of science fiction.
Prey, Nope, and Everything Everywhere All at Once are just some of the great sci-fi movies that have enthralled audiences this year and there's still the likes of Avatar: The Way of Water yet to come!
Unfortunately, to paraphrase Sir Isaac Newton, every great sci-fi film must have an equal and opposite rubbish sci-fi film.
Actually, let's clear something up. Not all of these films are poor in quality. Some just didn't make enough money at the box office, whether that was down to poor marketing or stiff competition.
Others though, boy howdy did they suck.
And then there's the ones that managed to land in that sweet Goldilocks zone of being awful films and underperformers at the box office. Pure gold they are.
These movies all aimed for the moon but came crashing back down to Earth in a blaze of embarrassment and disappointed cinemagoers.
2022 might have had its highs when it came to sci-fi, but those involved in making these movies are probably hoping someone invents the neuralyzer from Men in Black soon so they can forget all about them.
9. Jurassic World: Dominion
Hold your horses, or whatever the prehistoic equivalent of a horse is, we're not saying that Jurassic World Dominion didn't make any money.
Because good Lord, did it make a lot of money.
The conclusion to the Jurassic World trilogy, which united the stars of the current franchise with the main heroes from the original films, has taken over £1billion worldwide since its release in May. At time of writing, it's the second highest-grossing movie of 2022.
Not too bad, but it's a shame about all of the critical feedback this film has received.
In short, professional movie reviewers hated it, and critically, it's one of the biggest flops of the year. It sits on 38% on Metacritic and 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics lambasting it for its ludicrous plot, dull characters, and poor pacing.
The most common complaint though was not aimed at the film itself, but rather at the entire Jurassic series. Reviewers almost unanimously declared that it had run its course long before this entry and were thrilled to see it finally declared extinct.
Although, seeing how much money this movie made, perhaps the franchise has simply been frozen in amber for now.
